Sewing Lesson: Blind Hem

In this video I cover everything you need to know to correctly stitch a blind hem on a skirt, a pair of pants, or any other sewing project. I show you what kind of foot you need to have on your machine to correctly stitch out a blind hem, what the blind hem stitch looks like so you can pick it out of your decorative stitches, how the stitch should look when it is stitched correctly, and how it looks with both a contrasting thread color and a coordinating one. I also cover step-by-step how to fold your fabric in order to correctly stitch a blind hem. I show you how to do this twice in this sewing tutorial.

Thank you for showing how to do a blind stitch. My mom was trying to explain to me years ago how to do this over the phone. Seeing the video makes so much sense!:)

@mininabonita07 Glad you enjoyed the video. Yes, you have to either turn under the raw edge of the hem, serge it or zig zag it so it doesn’t fray in the wash. :o )

Thank you so much! I always alter my pants because I am short but I use a straight stitch and then my pants fray at the hem part inside. It’s so frustrating! Now I know what that foot for my machine is and will use your tutorial for my pants hemming from now on. I’m really enjoying your tutorials! And I just subscribed. : )

This video was awesome! I watched 4 before I got to yours and was still lost, and now I’ve got a perfect blind hem! Thank you!

@CosmeticCat I think the straight stitch takes care of the need to finish the raw edge.

@lmfaolol59 You have to read your specific sewing machine manual to see which setting is for the blind hem stitch. Every machine will be different. If you don’t want to leave the edge raw you should serge it or fold under before you do the blind hem. If you don’t have a serger I would just take a tight and small zig zag stitch across the edge instead of folding it because it will reduce the bulk. Have fun!

Questions….What setting do i put it on my machine to get the blind hem stitch? Also am I suppose to leave the edge raw or can i fold the raw edge under then sew? PLEASE answer! Great video thanks!

@TheCraftyGemini thanks : )

TheCraftyGemini November 6, 2011 at 1:38 pm

@gingermist21 I don’t have a video up on how to sew with satin fabric but I can tell you this- pin, pin, pin! It moves around a lot! I say get some scraps and practice first just so you get a feel for it and then go for it! :o ) Have fun!

gingermist21 November 6, 2011 at 2:31 pm

do you have a video on sewing satin fabric or how to hem satin? I’d love to use satin fabric, but am slightly intimidating to try it : ( Love your videos, they are most helpful :)

diamonddi November 6, 2011 at 2:42 pm

Great video but it would be easier to follow if she had used a lighter print fabric so we could tell the right side from the wrong side of the fabric. But, as far as explaining the procedure she rocked it out.

TheCraftyGemini November 6, 2011 at 3:35 pm

@madammorgo You are exactly right… it will be too bulky if you don’t cut off the excess. Glad I could help!

madammorgo November 6, 2011 at 4:17 pm

This is a great video and I think I understand how to sew a blind hem! My problem is that the pants I need to hem need to be hemmed about 2 inches. They already have a blind hem so I’m wondering, do I need to take that hem out, cut off excess fabric and then fold a new hem? Or can I leave it as is and fold and sew a blind hem? I’m worried if I do it the latter way the bottom of the pants will be too bulky. Thank you!!!!!
